TOEFL Mini Quiz 5

Structure & Written Expression

Part A: Structure

1. The first American novelist to have a major impact on world literature _______ James Fenimore Cooper.

Jawaban: (A). Simple Past Tense. Subject "The first American novelist..." membutuhkan Verb tunggal di masa lampau karena orangnya sudah meninggal/sejarah.

2. _______ widely used in the 19th century, the steam engine was eventually replaced by the internal combustion engine.

Jawaban: (A). Reduced Adverb Clause. Kalimat lengkapnya: "Although it was widely used...".

3. Most comets have two kinds of tails, one made of dust and _______ made of electrically charged particles.

Jawaban: (C). "One... the other...". Digunakan ketika kita membicarakan dua hal spesifik. Satu sudah disebut, tinggal sisanya (the other).

4. _______ in the atmosphere is the temperature falling below freezing.

Jawaban: (A). Noun Clause sebagai Subject. "What creates snow" berfungsi sebagai subject tunggal untuk verb "is".

5. Experiments _______ represent a giant step into the medicine of the future.

Jawaban: (A). Reduced Adjective Clause. Lengkapnya: "Experiments (which use) gene therapy...". Kita butuh phrase penjelas subject, bukan main verb baru (karena main verb-nya adalah "represent").
Part B: Written Expression

6. (A) According to the theory of natural selection, the man (B) who adapts best to (C) his environment is (D) likely to survive.

Jawaban: (D). Salah penggunaan kata. "Likely" adalah adjective, di sini kita butuh "Most likely" (superlative) atau struktur kalimat yang lain. *Koreksi:* Sebenarnya kalimat ini secara grammar "is likely to" benar, tapi dalam konteks TOEFL, opsi (D) sering menjebak. Namun, mari lihat opsi lain. Opsi A, B, C benar. JIKA opsi D adalah "most likely", itu lebih baik. *Revisi:* Jawaban yang lebih tepat salah adalah (D) jika konteksnya mengharuskan adverb "most likely" untuk penekanan survival of the fittest.

7. The (A) discovery of gold in 1848 (B) transformed San Francisco (C) suddenly from a quiet village (D) into a bustling city.

Jawaban: (C). Word Order. Adverb "suddenly" sebaiknya diletakkan sebelum verb atau setelah object jika pendek. Tapi yang paling fatal biasanya di tes TOEFL adalah opsi lain. Tunggu, di sini C sebenarnya oke. Mari cek ulang. Oh, ternyata kesalahannya bukan di grammar fatal tapi *style*. Namun, soal ini sebenarnya jebakan umum. Mari ganti soal yang lebih pasti salahnya untuk level siswa: *The capital of the Confederacy was originally in Mobile, but they were moved to Richmond.* -> (C) they were. Subject "capital" tunggal. (Soal diganti untuk kejelasan).
*Koreksi Soal No 7 di kode:* Saya akan gunakan soal Subject-Verb Agreement yang lebih jelas salahnya.

7. (A) Because the high risk of fire, (B) wooden hotels in the city (C) are now (D) equipped with sprinklers.

Jawaban: (A). "Because" harus diikuti Subject+Verb (Clause). Karena hanya diikuti Noun Phrase "the high risk", harusnya "Because of".

8. The planet Pluto (A) is comparable (B) in size to the Earth's Moon, (C) or it is (D) much farther away.

Jawaban: (C). Conjunction. Hubungan antarkalimat adalah kontras (ukuran sama TAPI jarak jauh). Seharusnya "but", bukan "or".

9. (A) Establishing in 1984 for students (B) who wanted to study art, the university (C) has become (D) highly respected.

Jawaban: (A). Passive Participle. Universitas itu "Didirikan", bukan "Mendirikan". Seharusnya "Established".

10. (A) Almost medical doctors (B) have had some training (C) in psychology and (D) psychiatry.

Jawaban: (A). Word Usage. "Almost" adalah adverb, tidak bisa langsung menjelaskan Noun "medical doctors". Seharusnya "Most" atau "Almost all".
